Dr. Raven Baxter gives Cancer Biology and Science Communication Seminar at Howard University
A sincere thank you to Dr. Stacy Farina and Dr. Dominique Pritchett for inviting me to present at Howard University's Biology Department. Speaking on the intricate subjects of cancer biology and the importance of effective science communication was an enriching experience.
The presentation focused on the fundamentals of cancer biology, the critical role of genetic factors in cancer development, and the parallels to science communication and the tumorigenesis of misinformation in society. We delved into how science communication plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between complex scientific concepts and public understanding.
Every educator loves the opportunity to work with students who are truly interested and engaged. The dynamic and inquisitive students at Howard held up a strong conversation. Their insightful questions demonstrated not just their understanding of these complex topics, but also their commitment to learning. The level of engagement was genuinely uplifting and served as a reminder of why making science accessible to all is so important.
Their thought-provoking inquiries, reflective of Howard's high-quality education, sparked conversations that transcended the confines of the lecture hall. These dialogues continued even after the formal conclusion of my talk, fostering an enduring intellectual exchange. We had lunch for about an hour after the talk!
As a science communicator, my goal is to inspire a love for science. Interactions like these reinforce my faith in the transformative power of education. I look forward to future collaborations with Howard University and more opportunities to foster a deeper understanding of science, and motivate the next generation of scientists and science communicators.
