EP 06: Dolphin Shenanigans with Dr. Heather Spence
ABOUT OUR GUEST
Dr. Heather Spence
Make it stand out
Marine biologist and composer Dr. Heather Spence merges science and music to engage communities in deep connection with the ocean. Heather’s work promotes creative, integrative, win-win approaches to seeming conflicts between humans and our coastal environments. Over two decades, she has partnered with coastal stakeholders, establishing the first network of underwater listening stations in the MesoAmerican Reef system, and developing methods for listening-based non-technical participatory science. Heather’s approach is interactive. She partners with performers to interpret meaning, shape outcomes, and bridge languages and genres. With 200,000+ soundscapes recorded and 100+ compositions realized, Heather’s innovative “Nature Music” is recognized by scientific and artistic circles, including Mexican Federal Commission on Marine Protected Areas and Studio.com alongside Ryan Tedder, Idina Menzel, H.E.R., Shane McAnally, and Pentatonix. Heather shares the voice of the ocean with coastal communities and landlocked regions; we are all ocean stakeholders on this blue planet.
