Dr. Raven Baxter was born a nerd, curious about the world around her. In sixth grade that curiosity won her a scholarship to U.S. Space Camp. When she figured out that she could answer questions for a living, she became a scientist.
Her early career ambitions spanned environmental law and policy. After a scenic academic journey, she stumbled into genetics and molecular biology at Buffalo State University and never left. She earned her bachelor's and master's in biology and became a drug discovery scientist.
In 2016, when conversations about science shifted in the USA, she turned to social media and became a science communicator, and music became her signature. When the pandemic hit in 2020, her COVID-19 safety rap "Wipe It Down" went viral, and her antibody song "Antibodyody" was referenced on Saturday Night Live. Fortune named her to its 40 Under 40 in Health that year.
When a biology doctoral program called her public engagement plans out of scope, she earned a Ph.D. focused in science communication at the University at Buffalo instead in 2022, studying how hip-hop can carry science to new audiences.
In 2024 she became Director of Science Communication at Mount Sinai's Cohen Center. Pfizer named her co-host of Science Will Win in 2025 and host in 2026. That year she also founded the Science Communication Consortium on Ethics and joined the board of the Washington Academy of Sciences in D.C., where she is rejuvenating a nearly 130-year-old organization co-founded by Alexander Graham Bell. Her honors also include Forbes 30 Under 30, the EBONY Power 100 and a Gold W3 Award for Science Will Win.
As she puts it, "I'm not afraid of the hard conversations or controversial topics. Even in the face of mistrust, skepticism and fear, I center joy, curiosity and empathy."
